12A- Figuring out buyer behavior

In general there are not many segments in my idea than others maybe.

So I came up with two different options. First of all the basic idea is that supermarkets implement making customers pay for plastic bags which the supermarkets provide. This incentives them to bring their own one.

My first interviewee was a college student. He said he would be very upset with the idea since it decreases his convenience. Therefore, he would most likely still pay for them since he might not remember to bring his own bag.

My second interviewee was an elderly women who said that she is already bringing her own bag. Therefore, she does not really have the need.

My third interviewee was working male. His opinion was really interesting since he said he would most likely buy a bag that is sturdy and reusable.

This directly brings me to my second option/segment. Come up with a fashionable, sturdy and cheap option as a shopping bag.

The third interviewee then mentioned that the things he would like most in such a bag would be that it is light, and protects meat from going bad. Therefore it should be insulated. He stated that the look of the bag does not matter.

Another college student, when I asked him about such a bag, in contrast stated that looks were very important and he would like to have shopping bag in different colours/themes. Also he would be willing to buy it online and not only in a supermarket

Conclusion:
These interviews helped me to see that there are certain things I have to take into account when developing such a bag.

  1. Hi Viet. I like your proposal to have a price attached to the plastic bags used at supermarkets. One effective way to convince customers to bring reusable bags is through their wallets. The perspective of your first interviewee is probably one shared by many, and so the price might have to be more than simply the manufacturing cost, likely including the environmental cost as well. Your third interview demonstrates the market potential for many types of reusable bags. With this information, you can experiment with different combinations of product traits until you have a commercially viable alternative to plastic bags.

  2. Greetings Viet,
Personally I do not like the idea of having to pay for the plastic bags, but I see how this would be a very useful way to cut down ton the usage of such bags. I personally am a little worried about how you could make the reusable shopping bags unique and innovate. Many shopping centers are already trying to implicate this idea and have made their own, usually with their personal company logo.
